FAMOUS FIAT CURRENCY FAILURES 1790s - French Assignat During the French Revolution the new government printed so much money that the currency lost 99% of its value within five years. 1923 - German Mark The most famous currency collapse in history. The printing presses went into overdrive to cover lost production and pay striking workers after the French invaded the Ruhr. 1930s - 1940s - Chinese Fabi When Japan invaded China in 1937, the government inflated the currency to finance the war effort. The currency collapse contributed to the collapse of the Nationalist government. 2000s - Zimbabwe Dollar After failed economic reforms printing money became the way the government financed all its needs. Fewer goods and more units of currency led to an explosive hyperinflation. 2010s - 2020s - Venezuelan Bolivar A significant drop in the oil price led to a fall in the demand for Bolivars. The cost of imported goods rose. President Nicholas Maduro decided that his solution to the problem was to print more money. www.hardmoneyhistory.com
